Impressionism and Poetry

It has been another busy week in Year 5! This week in English, we have been continuing our unit about Poetry. We have written some 'I am' poems following a particular writing structure. We chose to write about some of our favourite fictitious characters and tried to be as creative as we could with our answers! What do you think about our poems?

In CCS we are investigating how Impressionist painters show 'light'. We examined photos of Wat Arun in different seasons, weather and times of the day. Using oil pastels, we have tried to recreate Wat Arun in different 'lights'. Have a look at our work!

Poems about a sunny day

This week in English, we have been writing poems about light. We read 'Bed in Summer' by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is a poem about a boy who is ill in bed and watches what happens through his window on a sunny, summery day.

To write our own versions, we went out to the field and lay down, peacefully listening to all the sounds around us and thinking about how being outside made us feel. Here are some of the brilliant poems that we wrote...

Sunny day by Aimie
I shut out the light on a sunny day,
I laid down and closed my eyes right away,
Leaves from the tree falling slowly, elegantly,
The school bell rang and everyone sits peacefully.

The birds chirped really loud,
SPLASH! Went the swimming crowd,
The leaves started to fall,
And the broom kept on sweeping the ball.

It was really hot, super hot,
As hot as a boiling pot.

Sunny day by Rolex
I shut out the light on a sunny day and hear
Men sweeping, the sound reaches my ear,
The wind is blowing,
It feels relaxing,
A bird is tweeting,
It is peaceful.
I open my eyes again and now I feel more peaceful.

Sunny day by Kane
I shut out the light on a sunny day and stay

Home and hear people talking far away.
I hear leaves rustling,
and hear birds whistling,
But why can't I just go out to play?

I was just sleeping,
Until I heard a man sweeping.
I can smell the air,
and see what I wear,
But I just want to go out and play,
Why do I have to stay in bed all day?

Sunny day by Nano
I shut out the light on a sunny day and
While cars went by day after day,
I hear splashing from the pool,
While I am at school,
As the birds tweet on a tree,
I see my friends at the sea,
When it becomes night,
I turn off my light
And go to sleep.

Impressionism, spooky stories and line graphs.

Year 5 have really been getting into their CCS topic, Impressionism, this week. We have been practising different impressionist techniques using different art media to draw our impressions of grass. To do this, we have tried out using different coloured paper, oil pastels, wax crayons and varying our brush strokes when using paint.

In English, we have written our final versions of our Suspense & Mystery stories. All the time we have spent planning, drafting, editing and improving has really paid off as the stories are spectacularly spooky! We can't wait for you to read them!

In Maths, we are studying our Statistics topic. We have perfected our technique of drawing accurate line graphs and can interpret data presented in a variety of different ways.

Week 10: Spook-tacular fun!

Happy Halloween to all!

We have had a great week in Year 5. On Wednesday, we got creative making spooky Halloween decorations and working on a Halloween-themed Break Out Challenge. The parents' party was a great success, we all had a spook-tacular time! The Thai trip finished off our week nicely, with everyone having fun and learning lots too.
